a word of warning to my fellow Vox librarians...

Dear Agathafrye,

To the casual reader, "need[ing] to be careful what [you] say on [your] blog" in response to my question to elaborate on a story you provided sounds like you have something to hide. Or so it seems to me. Do you?

Be that is it may, I wish to correct the record. SafeLibraries is not right wing. Actually, some of the best champions of the same goals we seek are left wing, as you would say. They are the best because when they seek the same goals of allowing public citizens to control their own destinies instead of being controlled by the American Library Association, they are not being subject to attack for being right wing. You see, calling something right wing, whether or not it is true, is merely ad hominem argument. No one is impressed by arguments based on how imperfect the speaker appears to you, particularly where such argument is your only argument.

Another falsehood, SafeLibraries's cause is not "filtered internet access in public libraries" (, except in my own town). Rather, it is the allow the public to make such decisions for themselves, instead of having it forced on them by the ALA and its acolytes. Since I have the United States Supreme Court behind me whereas the ALA lost big in US v. ALA, ad hominem attack and blatant falsehoods fall like rain off my shoulders.

Your total misrepresentation of the facts combined with your ad hominem arguments, and your spreading the word that everyone should zip their lips, only hurts yourself and how people will view your arguments in the future. In the future, please consider making argument on the merits.

Thank you.

I'm not really interested in engaging you in debate, since we both feel strongly about our stances on these particular issues and neither one of us is likely to change our minds. Good luck on your quest.
