In 1999-2000 at the age of 89 and with emphysema, Doris "Granny D" Haddock walked across the United States to raise awareness for campaign finance reform. Her memoir not only chronicles this adventure but she also shares exciting moments throughout her life. Her life has been full of adventure, challenges, lessons, and love which she shares with vulnerability, humility, humor, and wisdom. I felt like I was sitting with an incredibly courageous, intelligent, and strong woman and could have listened for hours on end. Hers is an incredibly inspiring story. And since the campaign finance reform bill that finally passed in 2002 was the McCain-Feingold Act, this book felt rather timely.
I quit a 20 year smoking the habit the night after starting this book. Granny D is such a source of inspiration that I didn't want to leave her and lingered over this book for three weeks.
